Indirect: He said to me that he would call me back in ten minutes as he got out of the car.

Direct: “We will be leaving soon,” the couple said.
Indirect: The couple said that they would be leaving soon.

Direct: “I have been asked a question by a previous teacher,” he said to his new instructor.
Indirect: He told his new instructor that a previous teacher had asked him a question.
