What is a Subordinate Clause?

A subordinate clause, also known as a dependent clause, is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate, but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence because it depends on another clause, called the main clause, for its meaning.

In other words, a subordinate clause cannot express a complete thought on its own, but instead provides additional information, such as the time, place, reason, condition, or manner, about the action or state of the main clause.

For example: “After I finish my homework, I will watch TV.” In this sentence, “After I finish my homework” is a subordinate clause because it cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and depends on the main clause “I will watch TV” for its meaning.
